The Macro: Hospitals Want AI but Are Terrified of Deploying It
I talked to a hospital CIO last month who told me his inbox contains pitches from 40 different AI vendors. Radiology AI, pathology AI, clinical documentation AI, sepsis prediction AI, scheduling AI. Every one of them claims to save lives and cut costs. He has approved exactly zero for deployment. Not because the products are bad. Because he has no infrastructure to evaluate whether they are safe, no system to monitor them after deployment, and no way to prove compliance if a regulator comes knocking.
This is the state of clinical AI adoption in American hospitals right now. The technology exists. The regulatory pressure is intensifying. The FDA, HHS, and ONC are all publishing frameworks and guidance documents about responsible AI deployment. But the hospitals themselves have no operational infrastructure to actually do what the regulators are asking. They are being told to monitor AI performance, detect bias, maintain audit trails, and document governance decisions. Most health systems do this with spreadsheets and committee meetings that happen quarterly.
The result is paralysis. Hospitals that could benefit from AI are not deploying it. Patients who could benefit from faster diagnoses are not getting them. And AI vendors with genuinely good products are stuck in 18-month sales cycles because the governance process is manual, slow, and terrifying for everyone involved.
This is a governance problem, not a technology problem. And governance problems are solved by infrastructure.
The Micro: Two Founders Building the Missing Layer
Aria Vikram and Tony Yamin founded Parachute in San Francisco as part of Y Combinator’s Summer 2025 batch. Vikram is the CEO and Yamin is the CTO. They are a two-person team right now, which is small for the complexity of what they are building but consistent with the YC playbook of shipping fast with a focused founding team.
Parachute is a platform that sits between the hospital and its AI vendors. It handles four phases of the clinical AI lifecycle. First, discovery and prioritization, helping hospitals identify which AI solutions match their clinical needs and budget. Second, evaluation and approval, automatically scoring vendors on accuracy, safety, and bias without requiring manual testing by hospital staff. Third, deployment and monitoring, tracking performance in production with early-warning systems for model drift, accuracy degradation, and compliance violations. Fourth, audit and documentation, generating regulatory-ready trails that satisfy NIST, FDA, HHS, ONC, ISO, CCPA, and GDPR requirements.
The immutable audit trail is the feature I keep coming back to. Clinical AI decisions affect patient outcomes. When something goes wrong, and in healthcare something always eventually goes wrong, the hospital needs to prove that it had appropriate governance in place. That it evaluated the AI properly. That it monitored performance. That it detected and responded to issues. Right now, most hospitals cannot prove any of this because the documentation does not exist in a structured, auditable format.
Parachute also includes a vendor marketplace, matching hospitals with AI solutions that fit their specific needs. This is smart because it positions Parachute as the gatekeeper, the entity that both sides of the market need to go through. AI vendors want access to hospital buyers. Hospitals want vetted, pre-evaluated AI options. Parachute sits in the middle and takes a piece of both flows.
The integrations include ServiceNow, MLflow, OneTrust, Microsoft Purview, SharePoint, and Gmail. That integration list tells me they are building for IT and compliance teams, not for clinicians directly. This is the right call. The buying decision for clinical AI governance sits with the CIO and the compliance officer, not with the radiologist.
I want to see the automated evaluation system in action. Scoring an AI model for bias and accuracy without manual testing is a bold claim. The devil is in the validation methodology. How does Parachute define bias for a sepsis prediction model versus a radiology screening tool? These are very different problem domains with very different fairness criteria. If the evaluation is generic, it is not useful. If it is specific to each clinical domain, that is a massive amount of work for a two-person team.
The Verdict
Parachute is solving a problem that every hospital CIO I have spoken with describes as urgent. The regulatory walls are closing in. AI vendors are piling up. And the internal governance infrastructure at most health systems is nonexistent. Someone needs to build this layer, and Parachute is the first company I have seen that is focused exclusively on it.
The competitive landscape has adjacent players but no direct competitor doing the same thing. Validic and Health Catalyst do health data infrastructure but not AI governance specifically. OneTrust does privacy and compliance but not for clinical AI deployment. The AI vendors themselves, companies like Viz.ai, Aidoc, and Nuance, build governance features into their own products but obviously cannot evaluate their competitors. Parachute is vendor-neutral governance, which is the only version hospitals should trust.
At 30 days, I want to know whether any health system has moved from pilot to production. Two-person startups selling into hospitals is a test of patience and persistence. At 60 days, the question is whether the automated evaluation actually works across multiple clinical domains or whether it needs heavy customization for each use case. At 90 days, I need to see whether the vendor marketplace is generating real deal flow or just sitting there as a feature on the website. The thesis is rock solid. The execution challenge is selling governance infrastructure to organizations that historically resist buying anything new. The irony of healthcare AI is that the hospitals that need Parachute the most are the ones that will take the longest to buy it.
